The Teutons were famous warriors, but they weren't very good
at spelling. In order to help them remember how to spell their name, their chieftain
(whose name was Tetanus) decided to have their shields made in the shape of the
After particulary heavy fighting, the shields were often
badly damaged or even broken into several pieces. Because of shortage of iron
ore in the Teuton's homeland, the warriors were forced to collect the pieces
from the battlefield so that they could be fitted back together to make new
shields – an early example of re-cycling.
Each soldier had to find just the right 4 pieces to make the
whole »T« or face banishment.
